Destination grad

Sorry it’s been so long since my last post. I spent three days attending the  Professional Photographers of Canada National convention. So now I’ve come home with all sorts of new ideas and plans!

Now, onto the post.  :)  The day after I returned home, I headed back out to Indian Head where I got to shoot a grad student in her home town. I love being able to go to different locations to photograph grads, but with two kids at home, I don’t usually take on too many evening sessions out of town. I did, however, book this girl in, because though she likely doesn’t remember me, we go waaaay back. When I first moved to Grenfell, I took on a waitressing job (something I said I would NEVER do!) and this girl’s mom and grandparents ran the restaraunt. It turns out that I really loved waitressing, and this girl was only about 7 years old when I was working there. I probably haven’t seen her since 1999, so she’s changed a little! I enjoyed meeting her as an adult and catching up with her mom.  Here’s a collection from our evening together.

Her slow pitch team was playing a game the night of our session, so we popped by to say hi and hit a few balls. This girl can crank it too! Heels and a ballgown did not stop her from showing the crowd how it was done.

Golden sun and a pretty girl

I just love doing pictures after supper. It was so gorgeous out tonight, and I was super excited to do some pictures away from buildings! I’ve been doing so many sessions against stone walls, the Windsor block doors, Thomlinson’s red metal wall, etc. (which I love too), because there has been no green! Now I’m ready to get out and start shooting some more nature-y looking stuff again. This girl was a real sweetheart, and she just looked so beautiful when she did her “non smiley” look. She reminded me of a tiny version of Natalie from Fact of Life. But I’m sure she won’t have a clue what I’m talking about, because she’s waaaay too young to remember that classic!

Pink and sunny

This girl came down this afternoon from an hour and a half away, so we made sure we got lots of shots, with lots of variety. I loved that she wanted to go to my favorite spot in town too! We started off with the old stuff, then took advantage of a sunny day, with green grass, and did a set out at the golf course. We had to contend with a ton of wind, but that’s endurable, compared to the snow I had to deal with last week for grad formals!

Beach pics after the rain

The other night is started pouring out, about an hour before this shoot was supposed to be scheduled. Well, the rain cleared up, and the light was awesome for the evening. We did a combined grad formal and family session together. My first beach session of the year! The sand was pretty chilly on the bare feet, but it looks warm and summery in the pictures. :)

Broadview Grad - Finally!

I’m a little slow on my posting this week, so sorry girls if you’ve been checking in!  I did the Broadview grad class on friday, and as always, it was miserable outside. But what can you do?  Tough it out for a few seconds each is what we did, but mostly we stuck in the studio.  One of these days we’ll get some real spring weather hopefully!  Here’s a little peek at what we did on friday….

Just thought I’d better clarify. These are her niece and nephew! They were perfect little dolls :)

She does have a dress on.  ;)

Ziggy in the morning

I grew up in a house with music going at all times. Reggae has always been a favorite of the family, and Bob Marley tops the list. His son Ziggy did this version of Curtis Mayfield’s song, People Get Ready on Letterman years ago. I usually have YouTube up on my second computer, and I found this song this morning. I love it. It puts a smile on my face, and it’s nearly impossible for me not to dance to it. In another life, I wanna be a backup singer. :)

A warm day for a grad formal!!

I was a little worried at noon on tuesday when I was out to lunch with a photographer friend, and the rain came pouring down and the thunder and lightning were in full swing! I had this grad student coming out after supper for her formals, and I really really really didn’t want to get stuck doing them all inside! Luckily the skies cleared, and we had a gorgeous night with spectacular light. Hooray. :)

The shot above could possibly be one of my favorite grad formal images ever! I just love the light hitting the trains and her hair.

A spring wedding

On Saturday morning I woke up at 6:00 a.m. and looked out my kitchen window to find a lawn covered in soft white snow. May 9th. Not a nice day for a wedding. I was already dreading shooting again on another chilly day, especially for a wedding that was supposed to be a fresh new spring wedding! I was discouraged for a few hours, until the day started to take a turn for the better. By the afternoon the sun was out, and the chill was mostly gone from the air! Yippee!!  It ended up being cloudless, blue and bright.  Perfect.

I met the bride and her family at their home before the ceremony. This was a musical family, and some of the girls broke out in song at one point. Pretty cute. I won’t go into any more detail about what other things the girls talked about that morning ;)  Inside joke…..

Thanks so much for being an awesome couple to kick off to the new 2009 wedding season. I had a great time with you all, and thanks for letting me tag along in the limo!

Friday Grads - Part 2 - The Eternal Winter

When we booked these sessions a few months ago, I don’t think that any of us anticipated having snow falling for them, being it was May 8th! But we did have a light snowfall, and it was bitter cold. We had scheduled them for 6:30 p.m., so that made it that much chillier. Again, because I’ve been shooting so many grads in Grenfell, we decided to meet up in Broadview for these four sessions. It was a bit of a wing it night, but we found some funky spots and had fun, despite numb fingers.  Thanks to you girls for being good sports, and thanks to Marcy again for coming along, and second shooting!

Friday’s grads - Part 1

Friday afternoon I had two grad students stop in. The first was a formal grad shoot. This girl was such a doll. She has such a warm smile and personality. I was just happy being in the same room with her. You might also recognize her brother in this post, since I photographed him a few weeks ago as well. I really enjoyed meeting this family. You could tell they were very close, with all the giggling and joking around the whole time. You guys just made my day!

My second session was another casual shoot. This girl had originally planned on bringing her horse for her pictures, but things changed, and she brought her pup in instead. That was a little easier to work with anyway, so it was all good. He was such a cutie too! When we stopped to do this first shot at the high school, we had so many teachers stopping, commenting, and watching! It was a bit of a spectator sport there for a few minutes, with all the people standing behind me, cheering her on!
