The grads are back

There isn’t much of a gap anymore between the formal grad season and the casuals.  I love doing the casuals in the late summer and fall for the upcoming grad students. These girls were very ahead of the game, and booked a few months ago to make sure they got in before the snow hit the ground!  We had a gorgeous night too, so it all worked out perfectly.  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE shooting in the evenings in august. My absolute favorite month of the year to shoot in.  It’s just incredible light after supper.  I wish we could have a few more months like this.

13 years later…

I moved to Grenfell in 1997. When I first came, I had an old camera of my dad’s. It wasn’t fancy, but I fooled around with it. I did a few pictures of my cousin’s kids a couple times. Shortly after that, I photographed my cousin’s  friend’s daughters. This is one of those  little girls. She was 5 at the time. Now she’s moved away from Grenfell, but came back last week to have me photograph her casual session. Crazy!! I can’t believe I’ve been doing this that long!!!  There were so many people in the beginning that gave me a chance to learn, and make mistakes, and experiment. I know my pictures when I first started were less than spectacular, so I really appreciate all of you who got dressed up, did your hair and makeup, and let me photograph you, even if the result was far from professional in those days.

And thank you to you Monica and Stormi. You were one of my first real clients, and I’m so excited to have been able to capture this moment in your lives, now that I know what I’m doing!!  :)  :)

Friendship

This group of friends wanted to have some pictures done together, as they’d spent a lot of time with eachother throughout high school.  It was a fun session, with lots of goofing around, and lots of giggling and being young and crazy.  Best of luck to all of you as you venture off in your own directions!

Family, formal grad, casual grad. Everything!

This is graduate #2 for this family. I did his older brother’s grad a few years ago, as well as their family pictures. Everyone is a bit taller now than they were at the last session, but still as sweet as they were the first time. When they were walking up to the studio, my oldest son got all excited and said “Mom!! Look. It’s twins!!”  We shot a little of everything on monday night and even had a random appearance from a local.  Does anyone remember when Dave Letterman would put up pictures with famous people, then he’d find the funny bystander in the background of the shot, and circle him and say “What about that guy??!!”  Well, if you remember that, the one picture in the post will be funny. If you don’t watch Dave, then just pretend to laugh along with me.  And no, dad is NOT picking his nose. It just looks that way! He probably had a mosquito bite, as they were blood sucking killers in that area.

Wolseley Grad Day

Well, last friday was my last full grad class full of students. Crazy hectic, but the day went beautifully. I love shooting the Wolseley grad students, because my vine on my front steps has filled in perfectly by the end of June, and it is a deadly spot for so many different shots. It makes eyes look killer on close ups, and full length shots look like they’re taken in a tropical location.  It’s extra full and green too this year with all the rain (see, one positive to all the wet!!).  Hope you guys all had an awesome night last friday for your grad.  Congratulations!! :)

Gorgeous grad

Three guess why this grad student had to reschedule her session that we had originally booked…..  Oh you smart people. If you guessed rain, then ding ding ding!! You’re right!! Arrgh.  But the day she came was beautiful, though the ground was still a little wet.  Tea towels come in handy for sitting on, but if you don’t tuck them under the bum enough, you have to spend a little time photoshopping them out, somewhat like the mosquitos I had to photoshop out of the last grad sessions!  Anyway, back to the subject.  She was stunning, and had the prettiest eyes and I really enjoyed our session. Thanks for coming!!

Friday’s grads

Last friday’s grads….  the rain broke just in time!!  You wouldn’t believe how many red mosquito bite blotches I had to remove from these poor girls bodies!!  I even have a series of shots of the one student with a GIANT mosquito on her arm.  Thank goodness for photoshop! :)

Don’t feel bad that the boy only got one image posted. He was  there as an escort for his girlfriend, but he’s also graduating, so we couldn’t let him away without snapping a couple quick ones.

I don’t normally put family pictures in with the grad posts, but I just loved how these two family shots turned out. In a year from now, you’ll be seeing the youngest daughter’s grad pics on here too!

I ♥ evening sessions ☺

After rescheduling because of, you guessed it….rain, we picked an absolutely perfect night for this session, and I’m so glad we waited!! She had such a cool funky dress, so we wanted to try to  get to this area that I knew there were some cars that would work with her colors. I have to give a big thank you to the owners of the land we used. It was a wonderful location for this student.  :)  We had lots of help from dad with the reflector, and we were able to shoot some stunning images. After we wrapped up the formals, she wanted to do a bit of a casual session as well. For something totally different, we headed to the playground. With such a spunky, cheery personality, I think it suited her well!

This student’s brother is getting married in the summer out in B.C., so I shot a few images of them as well. This one they didn’t know I was chasing behind them, trying to get a couple frames.  I love it!

I was busy shooting away when I turned around and saw mom and dad goofing around on the playground jeep.  Had to grab a shot of them too. ;)

Kipling Grad

The Kipling class this year was HUGE!! Like as in 40 kids.  That’s alot for our area! Of course I wasn’t able to photograph everyone, or they would have been 10 minutes sessions, but I had 17 students. That’s one hectic day. Thank goodness for my awesome cousin, Morgan, who helped be a  reflector holder, take e-mails, explain products to parents, etc.

Because I always set up at the school, my outdoor shots are always done in and around the school. I try to do as many unique things as possible, but honestly, it does get challenging. I hope that you’ll see a different angle/location/photoshop technique, etc in almost every picture.  But the end of the day, doing 25 minute sessions straight through from 9:30 til 5:00, it is an exhausting day, not only physically, but artistically and mentally!   I hope you all enjoy the sneak peek though. I had over 1600 files to go through, so it is going to be a heavy bit of editing in the next little while!

In case anyone is wondering if this is a “real” pose, it’s not! This student was a total goof, and had some of the funniest expressions.  This was his Captain Morgan pose.

He also had the most unique tie. His dad made it, and it weighed a ton! It was all done in chain. He explained it all to me, and though it sounded very impressive (and incredibly time consuming), I didn’t follow exactly how it is done. His dad does sell some of his hand made jewelry at craft fairs, and will have a table at the big craft show in Carlyle. His company name is “You’ve got Maille”, out of Kipling.  Very neat stuff!

If Morgan was still busy getting information to parents, brother’s worked well as reflector holders too.    Thanks Bryce.  :)

Finally, a session with a horse!

I’ve had a few grad students wanting to do pictures with their horses, but it just hasn’t worked out with all the rain. Finally, plans came together, and this grad student was able to bring her horse down to Grenfell earlier this week. We barely got done the session when it started raining again, but we managed to get a good half hour before that!
